Selection Tools in Photoshop

In this article, we will discuss the tools commonly used to define areas of an image that you want to modify in Photoshop. Photoshop offers a variety of selection tools, but not all of them are used equally. The fundamental tools are the most favored by digital photography experts.

Rectangular Marquee Tool

This tool is used to select rectangular shapes. Clicking on the image activates the first vertex of the rectangle, and by holding the mouse button, you can draw the rectangle to create the selection area. If you want to make a perfect square selection instead of a rectangle, repeat the same process while holding the Shift key.

Crop Tool

The Crop Tool is used to trim and cut out portions of an image. After making a selection with this tool, you can either double-click inside the selection or press Enter to confirm and crop the image to the selected area.

Lasso Tool

The Lasso Tool allows you to make freehand selections. Click and hold the mouse button while you draw around the area you want to select. Release the button to close the selection. This tool is useful for selecting irregular shapes.

Magic Wand Tool

The Magic Wand Tool selects areas with similar colors. You can adjust its tolerance to select a broader or narrower range of colors. Click on the area you want to select, and it will automatically create a selection based on the color similarity.

Quick Selection Tool

The Quick Selection Tool is used to make selections based on color and texture. Click and drag the tool across the area you want to select. It automatically detects and selects similar areas, making it a quick way to select objects within an image.

Polygonal Lasso Tool

 

The Polygonal Lasso Tool is used to make selections with straight edges. You can click to create anchor points and connect them to outline the area you want to select. To close the selection, click the starting point. This tool is helpful for selecting objects with defined edges.
